Standing Alert: Defending Our Legacy Programs in Higher Education

Standing Alert: Defending Our Legacy Programs in Higher Education

There is a longstanding cautionary bit of wisdom oft whispered in the halls of academe,
“Beware the program evaluation.” All too frequently, administrative assessments are used to advance policy agendas that otherwise might meet significant resistance. Several Latino-focused initiatives in Illinois are currently undergoing or will soon undergo such a process, including the Latin American Recruitment and Educational Services program at the University of Illinois at Chicago (a program I directed for thirty odd years).

Gov. Quinn appoints Northern Illinois University (NIU) physical education professor to state Council on Health and Physical Fitness

Dr. Clersida Garcia was recently appointed to a four-year seat on the Governor’s Council on Health and Physical Fitness. The council, comprised of 50 members, serves to encourage Illinois citizens to participate in health and fitness activities. Members work closely with Gov. Pat Quinn in promoting and sponsoring public sporting and physical fitness events.

Dr. Garcia is a professor in NIU College of Education’s Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education (KNPE). She is an expert in the field of physical education and has given lectures and presentations at state, national, and international conferences in both teaching and research. She is founder of the Motor Development Research Program which serves young children in the DeKalb-Sycamore community. She started the program to provide opportunities for NIU students to practice teaching and observe the development of motor skills in children.
Dr. Garcia has made a lifelong commitment to provide services to the community and enhance health awareness, nutrition, and physical activity, among other social needs. Holding a seat on the Governor’s Council on Health and Physical Fitness not only rewards her individual accomplishments, but underscores KNPE’s position as an intellectual leader in physical education issues statewide

The Anhelo Project

In September 2012 the Anhelo Project was founded as a non-for-profit organization whose mission is to address the higher education opportunity gap for low-income, underrepresented minority students in the Chicagoland area. We began our work in 2009 by establishing the Dream Gala Committee to raise money and initiate a scholarship fund. This scholarship has assisted in decreasing the financial barriers that many students experience in pursuit of their education. Through our efforts, the Dream Scholarship is available to undocumented students who reside in Illinois and attend an institution of higher education within the City of Chicago. As of today, we have awarded $30,000 in scholarships.

When we remember the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we are reminded of his strength in speaking out against injustices that too often occur in the world.  This past Martin Luther King Day, 21 Enero 2013,  DREAM ACTION NIU and DeKalb High School’s Vanguardia Afirmativa de los Latin@s Unidos (VALU) participated in a collective mass student demonstration on a bitter cold Chicago Monday. The groups’ primary motivation for climbing out of bed on that subzero “free” school day was to demand a moratorium on deportations. This moratorium would not only freeze all deportation proceedings but also place an immediate halt to the separation of families -1,100 families per day, to be exact From its inception in 2008 and following its implementation under the Obama Administration, Secure Communities (S-Comm) has been responsible for the detention and deportation of hundreds of thousands of undocumented individuals each year. As a result of S-Comm, executed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, from 2008 to 2012 the Obama administration has deported approximately 1.6 million persons, and just like the U.S. defense budget, this number is rising every day.  We have seen this before.

Medicina Scholars 2013 Program

Deadline: Application must be received by (July 19, 2013)

The Medicina Scholars program was established in 2005 to assist, guide and support Latino college students interested in the medical profession. The program introduces students to the field of medicine by enhancing their knowledge on the role of health care professionals and the clinical aspects of medicine. The three-year curriculum gives Latino undergraduate students a strong basis to succeed and become competitive for admissions to medical school. Students partake in a series of professional development/medical seminars that are geared towards expanding their familiarity with the health field.
