Student Leader

Hugo Jacobo
Hugo Jacobo is a first generation Mexican-American born and raised in Chicago, Illinois.  He is an honors student who is currently finishing a political science degree with double minors in Latino and Latin American studies and Spanish at Northern Illinois University (NIU).
Hugo's interest in public policy and social advocacy in the Latino community has led to his involvement in a variety of advocacy organizations and research programs. He interned for three years at the Latino Resource Center (LRC) at NIU under the direction of Dr. Emily Prieto and was able to contribute to its numerous programs and initiatives. Hugo is also a co-founder of an undergraduate student-led organization called Dream Action NIU that assists current and prospective undocumented students at his university.  After its first year, the organization was able to fund four scholarships and significantly raise campus awareness about the obstacles undocumented students face in the U.S.  He is an active campus student leader who has served in various student advisory committees, including those associated with NIU’s  Political Science Department and the Latino Research Center. He has worked as a peer advisor for the Honors Program and led the Model Illinois Government club as its vice-president.
